Your Subaru hybrid vehicle contains an engine and a hybrid battery with its specialized systems, and this engine requires the same maintenance as a standard gasoline engine. Despite this, Subaru hybrid maintenance can be more economical than maintaining a standard gasoline-powered vehicle. As your Subaru dealer, we want to tell you more about these differences.

Reduced Brake Maintenance

When a gasoline or diesel-powered vehicle brakes, brake fluid is forced through the brake hoses to the calipers. The highly pressurized brake fluid forces the pins out of the calipers, and they close on the wheel rotors. The calipers contain brake pads, which have a rough covering that generates friction against the rotors and brings the wheels to a stop. The heat and friction of braking cause wear and tear on the system components.

Your hybrid uses regenerative braking, which reduces wear and tear. When you take your foot off the gas, the motor stops powering the wheels, and your vehicle slows. The kinetic energy produced by the wheel movement is collected by the motor and converted to electricity. This electricity is used to recharge the battery. Regenerative braking produces less friction, increasing the life of the brake pads, rotors, and other braking components.

Longer Oil Life

Oil is vital for the engine, as it lubricates all moving parts. This lubrication coats the components in a friction-resistant covering, protecting them from wear and tear. This helps your engine operate efficiently, so you’ll use less fuel. Oil additives break down potential engine blockages that can cause damage. The oil gradually thickens due to the accumulation of dirt and debris and generally needs replacement after approximately 5,000 miles.

Your hybrid uses its electric motor to replace the engine in certain situations. When you idle, for example, the engine switches off, and the battery maintains power. In addition, at low speeds, the battery powers the wheels. Reduced engine usage results in longer periods between maintenance and increases oil life.

Reduced Engine Maintenance

Your gasoline engine requires the same maintenance as a standard vehicle, as we saw above, but its serviceable components last much longer. This allows you additional time so you can more easily plan for scheduled maintenance like spark plug replacement, belt tensioning, and fuel injector cleaning.

Your hybrid contains many specialized components, including the electric motor and battery pack, but these systems require little or no maintenance. The battery, for example, is covered by warranty for eight years or 100,000 miles and generally doesn’t require replacement during your Subaru’s lifetime.

If you’d like to know more about your Subaru hybrid’s maintenance or to book maintenance, contact our service department today at Dean Team Subaru in Ballwin, MO.

Subaru BOXER engines are legendary for their performance, efficiency, and reliability. In fact, 96% of Subarus sold in the last 10 years are still on the road today. But how do you keep your BOXER running for years to come? Here’s our guide to Subaru engine maintenance and what to do to keep yours running right.

Stick to Your Maintenance Schedule

The engineers at Subaru are some of the best in the world, and they’re committed to building quality engines that can run for hundreds of thousands of miles if properly cared for. But that requires the owner to do their part. Fortunately, knowing what needs doing when is as easy as glancing in your Owner’s Manual, which will have a schedule for everything from oil changes to brake service intervals.

Keep in mind that hard wear or incidental issues can mean a service needs to be performed sooner than recommended, so consider your driving style and use cases, and don’t be afraid to schedule a service early if you think your Subaru needs it.

Change Your Motor Oil Regularly

Perhaps the single most important and most frequent engine-related service your Subaru will need is regular oil changes. Remember that motor oil degrades both with use and time, so it’s best to change the oil when you hit either the mileage marker or the expiration date, and not to wait until you hit both. Have a discussion with your team about whether your driving style and use case makes it better to use synthetic oil, conventional oil, or a blend.

Get Your BOXER Fresh, Clean Air

Just like you, your Subaru’s engine needs clean, fresh air to run at its best. Air filters can clog with dust or pollen, and can reduce your engine’s airflow, reducing performance and efficiency at the same time. Fortunately, the solution is as simple as having our team swap out your air filter with a fresh one, a service that’s both affordable and effective.

Check Your Exhaust System

Like all combustion engines, the correct amount of back pressure from the exhaust system is critical to keeping your Subaru running smoothly. Issues with the muffler or catalytic converter can decrease efficiency and hurt performance, so it’s important to have our maintenance team inspect your Subaru’s exhaust system on a regular basis to make sure it’s flowing smoothly and minimizing emissions.

Get a Diagnostic

If you notice a decline in performance or efficiency, or if you simply get the feeling that something isn’t right under the hood, don’t wait. Bring your Subaru in for an engine diagnostic. Our team will use advanced computer diagnostic capabilities to help pinpoint the problem and get you a solution fast.

When your BOXER needs a checkup, trust it to the pros. Schedule your next service today at Dean Team Subaru in Ballwin, MO.
