The Subaru Legacy Is Reliable Sedan like No Other

The Subaru Legacy is one of the longer-running midsize sedan nameplates out there-and for a good reason. It has always had attributes that are uncommon on other entries in its class, as well as being a worthwhile purchase. A recent redesign for the 2020 model year marked the beginning of the vehicle's seventh production cycle. The 2020 Subaru Legacy continues-and, in some cases, improves on-the tradition of providing a well-rounded driving performance and convenience for drivers near St. Louis.

Power & Performance

Subaru has always stood out from other automakers by giving every single vehicle it manufactures a standard all-wheel drive. Most midsize sedans don’t have that; at best, a few offer the drivetrain as an option to swap with the standard two-wheel drive. Instead of engine power sending to just two wheels, it is sent to all four to ensure that they remain planted on the driving surface.

As a result, all-wheel drive is great for roads that are compromised by rain, sleet, or snow. And while all-wheel drive typically makes a vehicle less fuel-efficient because of the greater use of engine power, the 2020 Legacy still turns out some pretty impressive gas mileage numbers.

It’s a 2.5-liter flat-four that’s not too skimpy on output: at 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. However, if you want a lot more power out of your midsize sedan, you can spring for the 2.4-liter turbocharged flat-four engine, which is exclusive to the top-level Limited XT trim. This engine puts out 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, thus boosting acceleration ability when needed to merge into traffic or make that quick lane switch.

The new Subaru Legacy also comes loaded with safety and security features, the centerpiece of which is EyeSight. EyeSight is a collection of driver-assistance features, which are designed to make driving safer by automating or adapting certain tasks involved in operating the Legacy. Adaptive cruise control is for automatically adjusting your driving speed to maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead of you.

Pre-collision braking is for automatically inputting a stopping force when necessary to avoid a collision. And lane departure warning, sway warning, and lane-keep assist work together to bring you back to your detected lane of driving. Working with the EyeSight suite is high beam assist, which automatically switches the headlights between the high and low settings when an oncoming vehicle is detected to prevent impairment of sight.

You will never lack amenities in the new Subaru Legacy because this brand-new sedan comes loaded with tech features. At the base level, you can expect features such as an electronic parking brake, headlights that automatically turn on and off in response to amount of outdoor light, more than enough cupholders for beverages (eight of them), paddle shifters for more convenient gear-shifting ability, and a tray in the trunk underfloor for additional storage.

Entertainment in the cabin is provided by the Subaru Starlink multimedia integration system, which, at the very least, includes:

  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Cloud-based apps such as Yelp and Magellan navigation
  • Trial subscriptions to SiriusXM Radio and Travel Link
  • Two USB ports
  • An auxiliary audio jack
  • A 7-inch high-resolution LCD touchscreen.
  • And, much more!

And there are enhancements and additions available; they include push-button start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a garage-door opener, rear USB charging ports, dual-zone climate control, a larger 11.6-inch touchscreen, HD Radio, a full-fledged navigation system, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system.
