Power & Performance

The Honda Pilot has the option of all-wheel drive available on all trim levels, with the highest trim level offering it standard. The new Subaru Ascent offers standard Symmetrical All-wheel Drive on every trim level, allowing for increased traction and reduced body-roll even in dry conditions.

The Honda Pilot has the Intelligent Traction Management feature available on the second trim level, but the Subaru Ascent not only comes standard with the Traction Control System, but it also offers a full set of traction and stability features like X-MODE®, Active Torque Vectoring, and Trailer Stability Assist.

The Honda Pilot has a standard fuel economy of 20 miles per gallon in the city and 27 on the highway. The Subaru Ascent matches the Pilot's fuel economy on the highway but offers 21 miles per gallon in the city. That may not seem like much but, after years of driving, that two-mile difference will affect your wallet.

Technology

While both SUVs offer smartphone integration and an intuitive touchscreen, only the Subaru Ascent comes standard with all features. The Honda Pilot will require you to upgrade to the second trim option to unlock them.

The Honda Pilot and Subaru Ascent are also neck-in-neck when it comes to standard safety features. Both offer advanced safety systems with driver assistance technology. However, the Pilot earned a Top Safety Pick status from the IIHS, but the Subaru Ascent is a Top Safety Pick+. The Subaru Ascent aced its NHTSA crash test result while the Pilot fell short.

The Subaru Ascent also stands apart from the Honda Pilot in safety features by offering the 180-Degree Front View Camera.

Interior & Exterior

The Subaru Ascent has the upper hand when it comes to spaciousness and interior volume. The Subaru Ascent offers more passenger volume and more cargo volume for a more adaptable and comfortable ride. The Honda offers 152.9 cubic feet of passenger volume and 83.9 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume to the Subaru Ascent's 153.5 cubic feet and 86.5 cubic feet.

When it comes to rugged capabilities, the Subaru Ascent is better suited to avoid bottoming out with a ground clearance of 8.7 inches to the Honda Pilot's 7.3 inches. The contrast in ground clearance can make all the difference when the pavement ends.

Both the Subaru Ascent and the Honda Pilot come with advanced capabilities like 4G LTE Wi-Fi. The Subaru Ascent offers this feature standard on its top three trim levels for more convenience and entertainment while on the road.

Price

The base model of the Honda Pilot is slightly less expensive than the base model of the Subaru Ascent, but when you take into account the features absent on the Honda Pilot and standard features of the Subaru Ascent, the price difference is more in the Subaru Ascent's favor.

As you can see, the Honda Pilot and the Subaru Ascent have many similar qualities. They both come with standard safety features, impressive towing capabilities, and advanced infotainment technology. However, the Subaru Ascent creates some distance ahead of the Honda Pilot when you consider its superior traction and stability features, rugged design, and interior design.

The new Honda Pilot has an impressive design, but it doesn't quite match the capabilities of the all-new Subaru Ascent.
